At this size the argument for Torx is at its strongest and simplest. A drive that ejects the tool under load cannot do this job at all. A Phillips recess is designed to cam out at a set torque, so on a fastener that needs to be genuinely tight it fails before the joint is properly clamped. Torx drives on faces almost perpendicular to the turn, so the driver stays engaged and the full torque reaches the fastener. That is why high-torque fixings moved to Torx and hex rather than staying with cross-heads.

One practical note that arises mostly at the large sizes: you may also meet security Torx, which looks identical but has a small pin in the centre of the recess. A standard bit will not seat on one. If a T40 bit refuses to go fully home in what looks like a T40 recess, look for the pin before assuming the bit is wrong — security Torx needs a bit with a matching hole down its centre.

The steel is S2 industrial, hardened and tempered to HRC 58-62 — a shock-resisting tool steel taken to a high hardness while still absorbing impact rather than shattering. At T40 the loads through the six points are the highest in the range, so that combination is doing real work.
