The Phillips recess, which Torx displaced, was deliberately designed to cam out. Its tapered flanks push the driver up and out of the screw when a certain torque is reached, and that was a feature in the 1930s: production lines had no torque control, and a screw that ejected the driver could not be over-tightened. Every Phillips screw still behaves that way, which is why cross-heads round out so readily.

A Torx recess is a six-pointed star whose driving faces sit almost perpendicular to the direction of turn. There is no wedge, so there is no ejecting force. The driver stays in and the torque goes into the screw. That means a smaller head can carry more torque, the fastener can be driven fully home without a fight, and the recess survives repeated removal — all of which matter to a manufacturer designing something that will be serviced.

At 50mm this is the power bit length, putting the tip clear of the chuck so it reaches into recesses rather than fouling on the surround.

The steel is S2 industrial at HRC 58-62 — a shock-resisting tool steel taken to a hardness far above a hand driver's roughly 50, because a power driver spins fast and cams where a hand driver turns slowly under a person's feel.
