The distinction is real and it matters. Both are cross-shaped, but a Pozidriv recess carries four extra small ribs between the main cross arms, and its flanks are close to parallel rather than tapered. Phillips was deliberately designed to cam out at a set torque; Pozidriv was developed specifically to stop that, so it transmits considerably more torque without ejecting the driver. Put a PH2 bit into a PZ2 screw and it contacts only part of the recess, cams out early and rounds the head — which is one of the commonest unexplained causes of ruined screws in furniture and construction work.

Telling them apart takes a second: a Pozidriv screw head shows four fine lines radiating between the arms of the cross. Once you look for it you will notice how many screws around you are Pozidriv.

PZ2 dominates furniture and cabinet fittings, kitchen and wardrobe hardware, chipboard and construction screws, and European-origin fixings generally — which in practice means most flat-pack and fitted furniture.

The steel is S2 industrial at HRC 58-62: a shock-resisting tool steel taken to a hardness well beyond a hand driver's, because bits in power and impact drivers are spun fast, cammed and hammered thousands of times. Satin finished, ten per plastic case.
