That is worth stating plainly because it is a common and expensive mistake. Large cross-head screws — heavy machine screws, coach and structural screws, larger machinery and vehicle fixings — take real torque. A PH2 bit in a PH3 recess sits deep in the middle and contacts only part of the recess walls, so all that torque bears on a small area and rounds the head out within a turn or two. On a structural fixing, a rounded head is a genuine problem.

Three habits. Press hard into the screw while driving — the Phillips recess is designed to cam out, and the higher the torque the harder it tries. Use the right size rather than the nearest bit, because at PH3 the consequences of a mismatch are immediate. And set the clutch on a drill-driver rather than relying on feel, since a large cross-head screw driven hard past its seat will strip its recess or its thread.
