PH2 fits the great majority of cross-head screws: machine screws, woodscrews, chipboard and construction screws, appliance and equipment fixings, electrical accessories, and furniture and cabinet assembly. The 50mm length puts the tip clear of the chuck, so the driver reaches into recesses, mouldings, corners and confined framing where a 25mm insert bit leaves the chuck fouling on the work.

The specification is S2 industrial steel at HRC 58-62, and it is worth knowing what those buy. S2 is a shock-resisting tool steel, and shock is exactly what a bit in a power driver experiences — spinning fast, camming out, and in an impact driver being hammered thousands of times a minute. S2 can be taken to a high hardness while still absorbing that rather than shattering. HRC 58-62 is substantially harder than a hand screwdriver blade, which sits nearer 50, and it needs to be: hand drivers turn slowly with a person feeling what is happening, power drivers do not.

The practical consequence is bit life, and bit life matters more than the price of bits. A worn PH2 bit does not just work poorly — it cams out of every recess and rounds the screw head on the way, so a blunt bit quietly damages a whole day's screws. Because the wear is gradual, people persevere. Buying ten at a time makes discarding a worn one easy.
