At this size it is worth asking why hex socket screws persist at all, given how readily their recesses round out — and the answer explains where you will meet them. A socket head cap screw puts its drive entirely inside the head, so the head can be small, cylindrical and sunk flush into a counterbore. That matters enormously in machinery: it lets a fastener sit inside a moving assembly without projecting, lets components be clamped close together, and gives a clean bore that locates the screw precisely. No external-drive fastener does that.

They are also strong. Socket head cap screws are usually high tensile, so they can be tightened to real torque figures — which is precisely why the recess needs to be in good condition and fully engaged before you apply that torque.

Two habits. Clean the recess and seat the bit fully before applying power, because a bit short of full depth bears on a fraction of the face area and rounds the recess almost instantly.
