There is one thing about hex socket screws that makes them less forgiving than any other drive, and it is worth knowing before you round one. With most drives there is a fallback. A rounded cross-head can have a slot cut across it and be turned with a flat blade. A rounded slotted screw can sometimes be gripped with lock-grip pliers if the head stands proud. But a hex socket is a plain hexagon sunk into the head, and once its corners are gone there is nothing larger to step up to and usually nothing to grip on the outside — because socket head cap screws are typically cylindrical and sunk into a counterbore.

What is left is a screw extractor, welding a nut to the head, or drilling the screw out. All three are slow, and on a hydraulic fitting or a machined component they carry real risk of damage.

That is why prevention matters more here than elsewhere: clean the recess, seat the bit fully, and stop and reassess if the bit starts to slip rather than pushing on.
