The 190mm test pencil is the long one, and length is the entire reason to choose it over the pocket version. Consumer units, distribution boards, deep back boxes, terminal blocks recessed behind a panel, isolators inside an enclosure — these all have live terminals set well back behind other equipment, and a short probe means putting your hand where the shaft should be. The extra reach keeps your fingers outside the enclosure while the tip does the work, which is worth more than the small inconvenience of carrying a longer tool.

The build is a quality steel probe with a neon indicator, and the stated working range is 110 to 250V AC.

That range is worth reading carefully, because it defines what the tool will and will not respond to. It covers ordinary mains comfortably. It does not cover extra-low-voltage systems — 12V and 24V control circuits, doorbell and alarm wiring, DC systems, vehicle circuits, low-voltage lighting transformers. A neon lamp physically cannot strike below roughly ninety volts; there is not enough voltage to ionise the gas inside it. So a dark lamp on a 24V control circuit means nothing at all, and anybody expecting a mains tester to work on low-voltage wiring will get a dark lamp every time and draw the wrong conclusion from it.

The same limitation applies at mains voltage in a more dangerous way, and it is worth stating plainly. This tool indicates that voltage is present. It cannot demonstrate that voltage is absent. The circuit that lights the lamp runs through your body to earth, and anything that interrupts that path — insulating footwear, a wooden or fibreglass ladder, a dry insulated floor, gloves — leaves the lamp dark on a live conductor. Use it for identification and quick checks; use a two-pole tester or a multimeter, proved live before and after, when the answer decides whether you touch something.

The screwdriver tip is a convenience for slackening a terminal screw with the tool already in your hand, not a substitute for a screwdriver. The shaft is deliberately slim to reach into tight enclosures, and slim shafts bend and their insulation cracks when they are used for real torque.

Look after the insulation, because on this tool it is the safety component. Any crack, chip or soft spot along the shaft means the tester is finished — replace it rather than wrapping it in tape.
