Why ferrules exist is worth explaining, because plenty of installations still skip them and suffer for it. A bare stranded conductor clamped under a terminal screw is a poor joint: the strands splay, some escape the clamp entirely, the copper cold-flows and relaxes under the screw over weeks so the connection loosens by itself, and stray strands can bridge to the adjacent terminal. A ferrule gathers all the strands into a solid, dimensionally exact pin. The screw then clamps a solid cylinder, the joint stays tight, nothing splays, and the connection is both electrically and mechanically better. In panel building and control work ferrules are not optional practice — they are the standard.

The square profile is what distinguishes this tool from the hex version beside it. A square or four-indent crimp compresses the ferrule from four sides into a broadly rectangular section, which suits the rectangular clamping face inside most screw and cage-clamp terminals — the ferrule sits flat against the clamp rather than presenting a curved surface to it, so more of it is in contact. Which profile you want is largely determined by the terminal blocks you are wiring into and by house practice, and it is worth being consistent within an installation.

The ratchet is full cycle, so the jaws release only when the crimp has travelled its complete stroke and an under-formed ferrule cannot be produced. That matters here because a ferrule that has not been properly compressed does not hold the strands securely, and the whole point of fitting one is lost. Crimp pressure is adjustable to compensate for jaw wear and for variation between ferrule manufacturers. Jaws are carbon steel with a chemical black finish, and the handle is a comfortable pattern, which is not a trivial consideration on a tool used several hundred times in a day of panel wiring.

Working practice. Choose the ferrule by conductor cross-section, then use the matching die — ferrules are colour coded by size for exactly this. Strip so the conductor fills the ferrule barrel to its end with no bare copper showing beyond it and no insulation trapped inside. Insert squarely. And keep the ratchet clean and lightly oiled.
