Rosin core is the specification that makes this wire work, and it is worth knowing what it means. Run the wire through your fingers and it looks solid, but it is a tube of tin-lead alloy with rosin flux running through the middle of it. When you melt it onto a joint, the flux reaches the metal a fraction of a second before the solder does, strips away the oxide layer that forms the instant metal gets hot, and leaves a chemically clean surface for the solder to bond to. Without flux, solder simply will not stick — it beads up and rolls off like water on a waxed surface. Having the flux inside the wire means it arrives exactly where it is needed at exactly the right moment, with no separate bottle, no brush and no mess.
At 0.8mm this is the fine gauge, and it is the one for close work: circuit boards, surface-mount and through-hole components, connector pins, fine multicore wire, and small joints of every kind. Diameter controls how much solder arrives per second, so a thin wire lets you feed a small joint precisely and stop at the right moment. Use 1.0mm wire on a tiny pad and it dumps far more solder than the joint needs before you can react, leaving a bridged or blobbed joint that then has to be wicked off. The 100g reel suits somebody who solders regularly rather than daily.
The catalogue notes low spattering of flux and solder particles, which is a genuine quality difference — cheap wire pops and throws hot flux and solder specks as the flux boils, which is unpleasant near your face and leaves debris across a board.
One thing must be said plainly: this is a tin-lead alloy, and lead is a cumulative poison. The fume that rises off a soldering joint is boiling flux rather than lead vapour, but the solid wire and the residue do put lead on your hands. Work in ventilated air, use a small fan to draw fume away from your face rather than breathing over the joint, do not eat, drink or smoke at the bench, and wash your hands before you do. Keep it away from children. None of this makes tin-lead solder unsafe to use — it remains what most electronics work is done with, because it flows better and wets more reliably than lead-free — but the handling habits matter.
