The mechanism is a full cycle ratchet, and it is the reason to buy a tool like this at all. The jaws will not release until the crimp has travelled its complete stroke. You cannot stop halfway, cannot decide the terminal looks crimped enough, and cannot produce the single most common invisible defect in electrical work: the under-crimped joint. A crimp that has gone only part of the way through its cycle is indistinguishable by eye, passes a continuity test and works perfectly on the day. What it lacks is the cold weld — the deformation that bonds conductor strands to barrel and seals air out of the interface. Without that, oxidation creeps in over months, resistance climbs, the joint warms under load, and it fails as an intermittent connection or as heat in a panel.

Crimp pressure is adjustable, which keeps the tool honest as jaws wear and as terminal barrels vary between manufacturers. The jaws are carbon steel with a chemical black finish — a corrosion-resistant conversion coating that adds essentially no thickness, which matters on a die where small dimensional changes alter the crimp form.
