Non-Contact Voltage Detector

Start with DC 48 to 1000V. Almost every non-contact detector on the market works only on AC, because the principle they use — sensing the alternating field around a conductor — needs the field to be changing. A tool that also indicates DC opens up solar photovoltaic arrays and their string wiring, battery banks and inverter systems, electric vehicle and traction circuits, and DC control systems. With rooftop solar now going onto houses and factories across the island, that is a real and growing need, and DC at these voltages is genuinely dangerous in a way people underestimate — it does not cross zero the way AC does, so an arc it starts tends to keep going.

The AC range is 12 to 1000V, and the bottom of that figure is the notable one. Most detectors give up somewhere around 24 or 50 volts. Responding from 12V means low-voltage lighting, doorbell and alarm wiring, control circuits and signalling can be checked with the same tool that checks the mains.

The three-level sensitivity indication is the practical feature. Rather than one alarm that fires anywhere near a live cable, it reports high, medium or low signal with different tones and with red, yellow and green LEDs. That difference lets you find which conductor in a bundle is the live one and roughly how close or how deep a buried cable is, instead of standing in front of a wall knowing only that something in it is live somewhere.

A flashlight is built in, which matters more than it sounds — this work happens in ceiling voids, under floors, inside enclosures and in dark risers. Auto power off after three minutes protects the two AAA alkaline batteries, which are supplied. It is CE certificated and comes on a blister card.

The limitation is the one every non-contact detector shares and it must be respected. Shielding defeats them: steel conduit, armoured or screened cable, metal enclosures, depth in concrete, or another conductor in between can all produce silence over a live line. A signal proves live. Silence proves nothing. Prove dead at the terminals with a two-pole tester before you cut, strip or touch.
