A non-contact detector answers a question the older testers cannot: is there live cable inside this wall, this trunking, this bundle — without stripping anything, without touching a conductor, and without knowing where the ends are. It works by sensing the alternating electric field that any live AC conductor radiates around itself. Bring the tip near a live cable and the field couples into the sensor; the tool flickers and sounds. No circuit through your body, no probe onto a terminal, nothing exposed.
The stated range is 90 to 1000V, which reaches well past ordinary mains into three-phase and industrial distribution. The body is fire-proof ABS, and it signals in two ways at once — twin colour flicker plus an audible alarm — so it works when you are looking at it and when you are up a ladder looking somewhere else.
The specification also lists breakpoint detection, and that is the feature worth buying it for. If a buried cable has broken somewhere inside a wall, you can energise one end and run the detector along the cable route: it responds all the way up to the break and goes quiet past it. That tells you which half-metre of plaster to open instead of chasing the whole run, which is exactly what the catalogue means by helping to prevent unnecessary damage to decoration. On a finished house with paint, tiles or wallpaper, that single capability can be worth more than the tool costs, several times over.
The honest limitation has to be stated, because non-contact detectors fail in one direction and it is the dangerous one. They can miss live cable. Steel conduit, armoured or screened cable, a metal back box, deep burial in concrete, or another conductor lying between the sensor and the live one will all shield the field enough to produce silence over a live wire. A weak battery does the same. So a signal means live — trust it. Silence means only that no field was detected, which is not the same as proof the cable is dead, and it must never be the basis for cutting into something. Prove dead with a two-pole tester at the ends.
Used within that, it is one of the most useful tools an electrician carries: tracing routes before drilling or chasing, checking whether a circuit is really off at the board, finding which cable in a bundle is the live one, checking a suspect appliance flex, and confirming a wall is clear before a fixing goes in.
