The case for this tool is that it does the whole sequence. A single conductor going into a terminal has to be stripped, sometimes cut to a screw size, and often crimped, and this 9" plier covers all three: stripping 0.75 to 6.0mm², bolt cutting at M2.6, M3, M3.5, M4 and M5, and pressing wire from 22 to 10 AWG.

The bolt-cutting holes are the feature people overlook and then use constantly. Those threaded holes shear a machine screw cleanly to length, and — more usefully — they cut a screw whose end has been damaged without wrecking the thread, because the hole supports the thread on both sides of the cut. Anybody who has tried to shorten an M4 screw with a hacksaw and then spent five minutes chasing the burr off with a file knows what that saves. M2.6 through M5 covers the screw sizes found in electrical accessories, panels and equipment.

The stripping range of 0.75 to 6.0mm² spans light control wiring up to heavy final circuits, and the crimping range of 22 to 10 AWG matches it, so the tool stays with you from a lighting circuit through to a cooker feed.

A word about the crimping, because it is the part most often done badly. A proper crimp cold-welds conductor to terminal: the barrel deforms enough that the metal surfaces bond and no air can reach the joint to oxidise it. Done right it is as reliable as solder and better under vibration. Done as a simple pinch it looks identical, works on the day, then slowly develops resistance, heats under load and fails. Matching the die section to the terminal size is the entire difference, and it takes no extra time once the habit is there.

The body is carbon steel and the handles are double-colour soft grip — a rigid core for strength with a softer moulded outer layer. On a tool squeezed hard several hundred times a day that is a genuine difference to your hands rather than a styling feature.

Working habits worth having. Strip to the length the terminal barrel takes, so no bare copper shows and no insulation is trapped inside the crimp. Pick the die by the terminal's colour code rather than by eye. Pull-test the first crimp in a batch — a good one will not come off. Thread a nut onto a screw before cutting it and back the nut off afterwards, which chases the thread clean as it comes. And keep the jaws free of insulation debris.
