Hex Ratchet Crimping Plier

A hex die closes on the ferrule from six sides rather than four, producing a compressed section that stays much closer to circular. That has two consequences. The compression is spread more evenly around the circumference, which means less distortion of the ferrule and a more uniform grip on the strands inside it. And the finished ferrule remains round, so it enters and sits in round or rounded terminal openings and tubular connectors without being forced. Where a square crimp suits the flat clamping face found in many screw terminals, a hex crimp suits round openings and gives the tidier, more uniform result that inspection-heavy work tends to prefer. Which you want is decided by the terminal blocks in front of you and by whatever practice the installation already follows — the important thing is to be consistent within one panel.

Ferrules themselves are worth a word, because installations that skip them pay for it later. A bare stranded conductor under a terminal screw splays, sheds strands past the clamp, and cold-flows so the joint loosens on its own over the following weeks — a loose terminal that then heats under load. A ferrule turns the strands into a solid pin of known dimension, so the screw clamps a solid cylinder and the connection stays tight.

The ratchet is full cycle: the jaws hold until the crimp has completed its whole stroke and release only then, which makes a partially formed ferrule impossible. Crimp pressure is adjustable to allow for jaw wear over years of use and for the small variations between ferrule manufacturers. Jaws are carbon steel with a chemical black finish, a conversion coating that resists corrosion without adding thickness that would alter the die. The handle is a comfortable pattern, which matters over several hundred crimps in a day of panel wiring.

Practical notes. Select the ferrule by the conductor's cross-section and then use the matching die — ferrules are colour coded by size precisely so this is quick. Strip so the copper fills the barrel right to the end, with no bare strands past the ferrule and no insulation pushed inside it. Present it squarely to the die.
