The idea behind this tester is a small one that saves a surprising amount of time: it has both a flat and a Phillips tip, so the tool already in your hand fits both kinds of terminal screw. Anybody who has worked inside a consumer unit knows the problem — the board manufacturer used slotted screws on the busbar and cross-head on the covers, or the sockets on one circuit are slotted and the switches are Phillips, and a single-tip tester means putting the tester down and picking a screwdriver up several dozen times a day.
The probe is chrome vanadium, and that is a genuine step up worth pointing out. Chrome vanadium is the alloy steel used for proper hand tools — spanners, sockets, quality screwdriver blades — because the chromium and vanadium content give it hardness and wear resistance well beyond plain carbon steel. On a tester that will actually be used to turn screws, that matters: a soft tip rounds off a Phillips recess in a few weeks, and a rounded tip chews up terminal screws that then cannot be undone by anything.
The stated range is 100 to 250V AC, covering Sri Lankan mains.
It remains a neon indicator, though, and that carries limits which we would rather set out than let a customer discover. The lamp needs a small current to flow through the resistor, through your hand and body, and away to earth. Break that path — insulating footwear, a dry insulated floor, a fibreglass ladder, gloves — and a fully live conductor produces a dark lamp. So this tool answers "is this one live?" quickly and reliably in the positive, and it cannot answer "is this definitely dead?" at all. That second question needs a two-pole tester or a multimeter, proved on a known live source before and after the reading.
It also will not respond below roughly ninety volts, because that is where a neon lamp stops striking. Control wiring at 24V, DC circuits, bell and alarm wiring and low-voltage lighting will all read dark whatever their true state.
The buyers are electricians and installers working on boards, sockets and switchgear, panel builders, appliance and equipment technicians, maintenance staff in hotels and factories, and hardware dealers supplying the electrical trade.
Even with a chrome vanadium tip, treat it as a tester that can turn a terminal screw rather than as a screwdriver that also tests. The shaft is slim so it will reach into enclosures, and slim shafts are not made for leverage. Retire it if the insulation is ever cracked or chipped.
