The clamp is the whole point of this meter, and it does something no ordinary multimeter can: it measures current without breaking the circuit. On a standard meter, reading current means switching the meter into series with the load — cutting into the wiring or disconnecting a conductor, putting the meter in the path of the whole current, and hoping nobody has left it on a voltage range. A clamp meter opens its jaws around a single conductor and reads the magnetic field the current produces. Nothing is disconnected, nothing is switched off, and the measurement takes two seconds on a live running system.
That transforms diagnostic work. You can see what a motor is actually drawing under load, whether a circuit is loaded near its breaker rating, which of several circuits is carrying the fault current, whether one phase is drawing more than the others, and whether an air conditioner or pump is pulling more than it should — all without shutting anything down, which is often the difference between diagnosing a fault and being told you cannot.
The clamp range is 2, 20, 200 and 1000A AC, which reaches well beyond domestic work into commercial distribution and motor circuits. It also reads AC current from 220µA to 200mA through the leads for small measurements, DC voltage on 200m to 300V, AC voltage on 200 and 600V, DC current to 200mA, and resistance to 20 megohms, with continuity and diode tests. The display is a backlit 3½ digit LCD reading to 1999, with auto polarity, data hold, overload protection, low battery indication and auto power off. Three AA alkaline batteries and test leads are included, and it is CE approved.
Two honest notes. First, the clamp reads AC current only — there is no DC clamp function, so battery, solar DC and vehicle DC currents cannot be measured this way. Second, and more importantly: unlike the two bench multimeters in this range, no IEC 61010 measurement category rating is quoted for this model in the catalogue. That rating is what tells you how much fault energy the instrument is built to survive at the point you connect it, and it matters most at distribution boards and main switches, which is exactly where a clamp meter is most often used. We would rather flag its absence than let you assume it. Ask us before using it on a main board and we will check the manufacturer's documentation for you.
