Six steel fittings, and the one that separates this set from the five-piece is the male coupler. If you need it, nothing else in the range substitutes for it.

The full contents are one female coupler, one male coupler, three male plugs and one female plug. The three male plugs screw permanently into three tools; the female plug suits a tool whose inlet is a male stub; the female coupler goes on the hose end.

The male coupler is what lets you connect hose to hose, or connect a hose to a fixed air line coming off a wall-mounted reel or a compressor manifold. That is the situation the five-piece set cannot handle. Any workshop that grows past one hose runs into it: you want to add ten metres to reach the far bay, or plug a portable hose into a fixed installation, and without a male coupler there is no way to make that joint without buying more fittings.

So the choice between the two sets is not about quantity. Buy the five-piece if you have one hose and several tools. Buy this one if you have, or expect to have, more than one hose or a fixed air line.

Steel bodies matter on fittings that live on the floor. Couplers get trodden on, dropped and dragged, and a steel body takes that where die-cast or plastic cracks at the collar or wears oval and stops sealing.

"Japanese type" is the profile standard rather than the origin. Japanese, European and American couplers look alike and do not fit each other properly — a forced mismatch hisses permanently, chokes the flow and can refuse to release under pressure. This whole range is Japanese type, so hose, couplers and plugs mate correctly. G1/4" thread throughout, rated to 220psi.

Use PTFE tape on every screwed thread. Leaks in compressed air systems are nearly always at the threads rather than the push-fits, and a permanent small leak runs the compressor needlessly all day.
