That is a real distinction rather than a marginal one. A cordless drill with two batteries and a charger, or a small angle grinder, occupies most of a 400mm bag on its own. At 500mm there is room for the machine and for the screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, tape and consumables around it — so you make one journey from the vehicle instead of three, and you are not leaving half your kit unattended on a site while you fetch the rest.

The extra length also takes the longer hand tools that defeat smaller bags: a 500mm level, long pipe grips, a hacksaw, a large adjustable, a wrecking bar.

Tools stand in the pockets rather than lying in a heap, which on a big bag matters more, not less — the larger the bag, the worse an unsorted one becomes. The pockets keep the kit visible and let you check at a glance that everything is going home with you.

The fabric is wear-resistant and water-resistant. On a bag this size, wear resistance at the base is the specification that decides its life: a big bag is heavy, heavy bags get dragged rather than lifted, and the base is what wears through. Water resistance keeps rain off steel tools, which in this climate is the difference between tools that stay bright and tools that come out of the bag rusty.

The honest caution is weight. Filled to its capacity this bag is heavy to carry any distance, and if your work involves ladders or scaffolds you may be better with a smaller bag and a second trip — or with the tool vest, which puts the weight on your body and leaves both hands free.
