The length takes tools that will not fit anything shorter: a large pipe wrench, a 500mm level, long screwdrivers, a hacksaw, big adjustables, a crowbar. The width means the contents lie side by side where you can see them rather than stacking on top of each other. If your kit is mostly small tools and you would rather have depth than length, the tall 18" box is the better shape. If you want steel instead of plastic for durability, look at the hip roof boxes at 420 and 530mm — heavier, but they take more punishment.
