Specifically: a 450mm spirit level, a large pipe wrench, a long screwdriver, a hacksaw, a 12" adjustable — the tools that stick out of a small box and end up loose in the back of a vehicle. Being able to close the lid on everything is the difference between a kit and a pile.

The hip roof lid gives clearance down the centre for tall items standing on end, while keeping the sides low so the box stays narrow against your leg when you carry it. On a long box that shape matters more, because a long box with a flat lid is awkward to swing through a doorway.

The body is steel with electro-powder coating, which resists scratching and — more usefully in a tool box — solvent marking. Thinner, brake cleaner and adhesives get spilled in these, and they lift ordinary wet paint. Powder coating also builds up on the corners and folded edges, which is exactly where a steel box starts to rust once its finish is damaged.

Heavy duty metal latches are what make the difference over years rather than months. Latches are the first thing to fail on a cheap box: they distort, stop gripping, and then the lid opens while you are carrying it. Metal ones survive being trodden on and levered.

Steel rather than plastic means it takes impact without cracking and will not sag under weight or go soft in the sun. It weighs more — that is the trade.
