A stud crimper joins steel framing without screws, and on a partition or ceiling job it changes the pace of the work completely.
Steel stud and track — the light gauge sections used for drywall partitions, ceiling grids and dry lining — is normally fixed together with self-drilling screws at every junction. That works, but it is slow, it needs a driver and a supply of screws, screw heads stand proud and have to be considered when the board goes on, and a dropped screw on a ceiling job is gone. A crimper works differently: the jaws punch through both layers of steel and fold the metal back on itself, locking the two sections together in one squeeze. No screws, no driver, no consumables at all, and a flush joint with nothing protruding.
The specification says it is designed for steel keels of 0.6 to 1.2mm thickness, which covers the standard partition and ceiling sections, and the throat depth is 33mm — that is how far in from the edge of the section the tool can reach, which determines which junctions it can get to.
The frame is steel and the point head is 65Mn — a high carbon spring steel with manganese for hardenability and toughness. That is the right choice for a punching head: it has to be hard enough to shear through galvanised steel repeatedly without blunting, and tough enough to take the shock of thousands of punches without chipping. A soft head deforms and stops punching cleanly; a brittle one breaks.
At twelve inches it has the leverage to punch 1.2mm steel by hand, with a comfortable soft handle. It comes on a blister card.
The buyers are drywall and partition contractors, ceiling and dry lining installers, interior fit-out and shopfitting contractors, and hardware dealers supplying the interiors trade.
Two practical points. Crimp joints are strong in the direction the frame is loaded but they are a folded mechanical lock, not a weld — where a junction carries real load, or where the specification calls for screws, use screws. Most contractors crimp the bulk of the framing and screw the structural connections. And keep the punch head clean and lightly oiled, since galvanising picks up on the head over time and a fouled head starts tearing the steel rather than folding it. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price.
