Straight Jaw Lock-Grip Plier (10")

The straight jaw is the version to own first. Its flat, serrated faces grip flat stock, sheet, bar and hexagonal nuts across a wide opening, so it works as a third hand for welding and fabrication — clamping two plates in alignment while you tack them, holding a bracket against a frame while you mark it, gripping hot work you cannot touch. The curved-jaw version is better on pipe and round bar; the straight jaw is better on everything with a flat on it.

At 10" this is the large size, and the length is doing two things. It gives a wider jaw opening, so the tool covers a bigger range of material thicknesses, and it gives more leverage in the handles, so the clamping force at the jaws is higher for the same effort. For heavy fabrication that is what you want. For fiddly work near your fingers a 7" is easier to control.

It is made from steel plate and nickel plated. Nickel plating is a sensible finish for a tool that gets left on a job overnight — it resists the rust that comes with humidity and rain, and unlike paint it does not chip off the jaw faces where the wear is.

The adjusting screw at the end of the handle sets the jaw gap, and it is worth learning to use properly rather than fighting the tool. Set it so the jaws just close onto the work with a firm push, then a little tighter until the handles snap over centre with real effort. Too loose and the work slips; too tight and you will struggle to release it and will mark the surface.

The buyers are welders and fabricators above all, then vehicle mechanics — a lock-grip is the standard answer to a rounded nut, a snapped stud or an exhaust that needs holding while you cut it. Builders and steel fixers use them for temporary clamping, and they are a permanent fixture in maintenance kits. Hardware shops sell them across every one of those trades, which is why they are packed 40 to a carton.
