A sheet metal clamp is a locking plier with wide, flat jaws, and the width is the entire point. Where an ordinary lock grip concentrates its bite into a small area, these spread the clamping force across a broad flat face — typically the full width of the jaw — which is exactly what thin sheet needs.
The reason matters. Sheet steel and aluminium are thin, and a small hard bite in a thin panel does two things you do not want: it dents the surface, and it distorts the sheet locally so the two pieces no longer sit flush against each other. Wide jaws hold the panels tightly together over a broad area, keeping them flat and in contact along the joint. On a seam that is about to be welded, riveted or bonded, that flatness is the whole job — a gap between two panels means a weld that burns through or a joint that never closes.
So the work is panel and sheet assembly: holding two panels edge to edge or overlapped while they are tacked, holding a repair patch in place, clamping flanges together, holding sheet to a frame during fabrication, ducting and tray work, and gutter and flashing assembly. Several of them used along a seam hold a whole joint aligned while it is welded.
The locking mechanism works as it does across the family: a screw in the handle sets the opening, squeezing the handles drives an over-centre toggle past its pivot so the tool clamps itself shut, and the release lever opens it. Once locked, both your hands are free, which on a seam that needs six clamps is the only practical way to work.
Ten inches is the standard size. It is steel plate material, nickel plated — a stamped and riveted construction normal for locking pliers, with plating for corrosion resistance.
The buyers are sheet metal fabricators, vehicle body and panel repair shops, ducting and ventilation installers, roofing, gutter and flashing contractors, welders, and hardware dealers supplying fabrication trades.
Two points. Buy several rather than one — a single clamp holds a spot, and sheet work needs a joint held along its length. And even wide jaws mark: on a finished or painted surface put a thin strip of card or leather between the jaw and the panel, since these still clamp hard enough to leave an impression. Keep the screw and pivots lightly oiled. Message us on WhatsApp for a price on several.
