The reach is straightforward: two more inches of jaw goes deeper into engine bays, housings, ducts and enclosures than a six will. Less obvious is that the longer handles multiply your grip more, so this tool holds firmly what a smaller pair would let slide — a good deal of the frustration with long nose pliers comes from reaching something successfully and then not being able to grip it.

Where the material earns its money is in what those two things do to the jaws. Long slender jaws under high grip force are working hard, and the failure they suffer is springing permanently out of alignment. Chrome vanadium resists that better than carbon steel: the vanadium refines the grain and adds toughness, so the jaws flex under load and return, while the chromium provides the hardness that keeps the serrations biting and the side cutter sharp. A carbon steel plier of this size used at full grip is closer to its limit than a chrome vanadium one.

The handle is moulded ergonomic TPR — thermoplastic rubber shaped to the hand, grippy in oil — and the finish is black for rust resistance.

Two things worth saying about the bigger size. The extra leverage makes it easier to overload the jaws without noticing, so the old rule holds and matters more: a long nose is not a wrench and not a lever. Enough force will spring the tips out of line permanently, and the greater grip a long tool provides simply gets you there faster. And on the cutter, hardened material remains off limits regardless of the steel — nails, screws and spring wire will chip an edge that no alloy prevents, because they are harder than the edge itself.
