Capacity comes from leverage: the longer handles multiply your grip more at the edges, so heavier stranded cable, thicker single core, fencing and tie wire, larger cable ties and small nails part cleanly rather than being fought. That is not only about what you can cut — it is about how the tool survives. Most cutter damage happens when a tool is forced beyond its comfortable range, because the edges deform instead of cutting. A cutter working within its capacity keeps its edge for years.

Edge life is where the material comes in. Chrome vanadium gives a cutter what plain carbon steel cannot give it at the same time: chromium for hardness and wear resistance so the edge stays keen, and vanadium for grain refinement and toughness so that hardness does not come with brittleness. On a large cutter the jaws are carrying serious squeezing loads, and toughness in the jaw body matters as much as hardness at the edge.

The handle is moulded ergonomic TPR — thermoplastic rubber, shaped to the hand and grippy in oil — which on a tool that gets squeezed hard is what stops your palm being sore by the end of a cabling job. Black finish for rust resistance.

Two honest limits. The alloy does not change what a plier cutter can meet: hardened steel — nails, screws, spring steel, piano wire and steel banding — is harder than any cutting edge, and going at it removes a notch permanently, after which that part of the edge crushes rather than cuts. That is the single commonest way a good cutter is ruined and no material prevents it. Use an end cutter or bolt cutters instead.
