The size gives leverage, and leverage is what a combination plier trades in. Your hand grip is multiplied at the jaws by the ratio of handle length to jaw length, so an eight inch pair holds firmly what a six would let slip — a corroded bolt shank, a length of pipe being turned, a bracket being straightened, wire being hauled through conduit. The cutter behind the pivot benefits equally and goes through wire that stops a smaller pair.

The material is where the daily difference shows. Chrome vanadium's chromium raises hardness and wear resistance; its vanadium refines the grain and adds toughness. The practical effect is on the serrations. Combination pliers are almost never retired because something breaks — they are retired because the gripping teeth have worn smooth and the tool has started slipping off everything. Harder teeth stay sharp for years longer, and that is most of what you are paying for.

The three zones are standard: flat serrated tip for flat stock and nuts, curved serrated throat for round stock, hardened cutter behind the pivot where leverage peaks.

Three limits. The serrations mark what they grip, so use a cloth on anything plated, polished or threaded, and keep them off nuts you want to reuse. Hardened steel — nails, screws, spring wire, banding — chips a permanent notch in the cutter regardless of alloy, so use an end cutter or bolt cutters for that. And a combination plier is not a hammer; striking the jaws is a good way to crack them.
