Mini Bent Nose Plier

On fine work, the bend does two things. It reaches around obstructions — under a component, behind a connector, into the side of a housing — which on a crowded circuit board or inside an instrument is often the only way in at all. And it moves your hand out of your own sightline. That second point is easy to underestimate. Precision work is done by eye, usually under a lamp or a magnifier, and a straight tool approaching head-on puts your fingers between your eyes and the target at the exact moment you need to see it. An angled tip lets you come in from the side and watch the jaws close.

The work: placing and removing small components, holding parts while they are soldered, retrieving dropped screws and washers from inside assemblies, hooking and positioning fine wire, working on connectors in confined housings, and watch, instrument and jewellery repair.

The material is carbon steel, high-frequency hardened — a process in which a coil induces heat in the surface of the steel very quickly, so the outer layer hardens while the core stays comparatively soft. That leaves a hard, wear-resistant gripping surface on a tough body, which is precisely what a small slender tool needs: hardened all the way through, a miniature plier would be brittle enough to snap.

The handle is comfortable ergonomic TPR, moulded thermoplastic rubber, which stops a small tool from digging into the fingers during long close work.

The limit is the same as for any fine plier and it applies more sharply the smaller the tool: this is for small work only. Any real force — levering, turning a fastener, gripping something that resists — will spring the jaws permanently out of line, and misaligned tips cannot pick up the tiny things that were the point of buying it.
