Lock grip pliers do something no ordinary plier can: they clamp onto the work and stay clamped with your hands off. Turning the screw in the handle sets the jaw opening, and squeezing the handles drives an over-centre toggle linkage past its pivot point, so the mechanism holds itself shut under enormous pressure until the release lever is pulled. That is the whole invention, and it turns a plier into a portable vice.
This one has long nose jaws, which combines two useful things that do not usually come together. Long nose gives reach into confined spaces and onto small work; the locking mechanism gives grip far beyond what a hand can apply and holds it indefinitely. So you can reach a small fitting deep in an assembly, lock onto it, and then let go entirely to use both hands on something else.
The classic uses follow from that. Gripping a rounded or damaged fastener that no spanner will touch any more — the locking jaws bite so hard they turn what a spanner has given up on. Holding a small component while it is welded, drilled or filed. Clamping a broken stud so it can be wound out. Holding wire, tube or a bracket in position during assembly. And acting as a temporary handle on something that has none.
Nine inches is the general size for this pattern. It is steel plate material, nickel plated — a construction that is stamped and riveted rather than forged, which is normal for locking pliers and keeps the mechanism accurate and the cost sensible, with plating for corrosion resistance.
The buyers are welders and fabricators, vehicle and machinery mechanics, plumbers, maintenance fitters, and hardware dealers supplying workshops.
Three things worth knowing. The jaws are hardened and serrated and they bite hard by design — they will mark, score or crush anything soft, plated, polished or thin-walled, so this is not the tool for a fitting you intend to keep looking good. Do not use them as a substitute for a spanner on a good nut, because they round the corners. And set the screw so the jaws just close over the work before you squeeze: over-tightening the adjustment makes the toggle very hard to release and can spring the jaws. Keep the screw threads and the pivots lightly oiled. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
