That parallel action is the part that matters and it is what separates these from a simple slip-joint plier. Jaws that stay parallel grip along their whole face rather than pinching at the tips, so the tool holds a round object securely instead of sliding off it — which is exactly what you need on pipe, on a large nut, or on a fitting being held while another is turned.

Twelve inches is a substantial size, and the length is doing two jobs. It gives the jaw opening to take large pipe and fittings, and it gives the leverage to actually turn them.
