Groove joint pliers — water pump pliers, to most people — solve the problem that fixed-pivot pliers cannot: they adjust. A row of grooves at the pivot lets the two halves slide to several different positions, so the jaws open wide for a large pipe or close down for a small nut, and crucially the jaws stay roughly parallel at every setting.
That parallel action is the part that matters and it is what separates these from a simple slip-joint plier. Jaws that stay parallel grip along their whole face rather than pinching at the tips, so the tool holds a round object securely instead of sliding off it — which is exactly what you need on pipe, on a large nut, or on a fitting being held while another is turned.
Twelve inches is a substantial size, and the length is doing two jobs. It gives the jaw opening to take large pipe and fittings, and it gives the leverage to actually turn them. Plumbing work in particular is a matter of holding one fitting still while turning the next, and that takes real grip on both.
The work: gripping and turning pipe and fittings, holding large nuts and unions, removing and fitting hose clamps, gripping rounded or damaged fasteners that a spanner has given up on, holding components while they are worked, and general adjustable gripping wherever a spanner does not fit.
It is drop forged carbon steel, electroplated and anti-rusted, high-frequency hardened, with a comfortable ergonomic handle. Drop forging flows the steel's grain around the shape of the jaws instead of cutting through it, which matters at the grooves where the load concentrates.
The buyers are plumbers, vehicle and machinery mechanics, maintenance technicians, general building trades, and hardware dealers, who sell these steadily to households as well as trade.
Two honest points. The serrated jaws bite hard and will mark whatever they grip — chrome fittings, plated components and anything that will be visible afterwards need a cloth in between or a different tool entirely. And these are a gripping tool, not a spanner: used on a hexagon nut they round its corners, so if the nut has to come off again, use a spanner or a socket. Keep the pivot clean and oiled.
