That matters for the tool as much as for the job. Forcing a cutter that is too small is precisely how cutting edges get chipped and jaws get sprung: you squeeze harder, the wire resists, and the edges deform rather than cut. Using a cutter comfortably within its capacity is easier on your hand and far easier on the tool, so the bigger cutter often outlasts the smaller one used on the same work.

The cutting action is a wedging one rather than a shearing one — the two hardened edges drive into the wire from opposite sides until it splits — which is why these cut round wire beautifully and will not cut sheet or strip.

The spring open design reopens the jaws after each cut for one-handed work. The jaws are fine carbon steel, hardened, with two-colour anti-slip PP handles.

The limit to respect is material rather than diameter. Hardened steel — spring steel, piano wire, nails, screws, hardened bolts, steel banding — is harder than the cutting edges themselves, and going at it takes a notch out of the jaw that never comes back. After that, every wire laid across that part of the edge gets crushed instead of cut, and people conclude the tool was poor quality when in fact it met something it was never meant to meet. Keep an end cutter or bolt cutters for hardened material.

Two habits. Cut with the wire as far back in the jaws as it will go, where the leverage is highest, rather than at the tips where it is lowest and the jaws are weakest.
