Opening first. The adjustment grooves let the jaws move between several positions, and a longer tool covers a wider span at the top of that range — which is what lets it get around larger pipe, bigger unions and substantial fittings that the ten inch version simply will not close over. On plumbing work in particular, jaw capacity is usually the reason a tool is put down and a bigger one fetched.

Leverage second, and it is just as important. Getting a tool around a large fitting is only half the job; turning it is the other half, and a large seized union needs real force. Longer handles multiply your grip proportionately, so this tool both reaches around bigger work and actually moves it.

The riveted D4 construction keeps the pivot head slim despite the size, which is what allows a twelve inch plier to be used in places a conventional groove joint plier of the same capacity would foul. The multiple pivot positions keep the jaws roughly parallel at any opening, so they grip along their full face rather than pinching at the tips — the reason these hold round work securely.

It is drop forged carbon steel, anti-rusted, with a comfortable ergonomic dipped handle: a plastic coating applied by dipping rather than a slip-on grip, so it stays put.

Three points. The serrations bite and will mark chrome, plated and finished fittings, so use a cloth or choose a strap wrench where appearance matters. These are not a spanner — on a hexagon nut they round the corners, so use a spanner or socket wherever one fits and keep these for round work, seized fittings and rounded fasteners that are already beyond saving. And do not extend the handles with a pipe; at this size the tool already generates enough force to damage a fitting, and the next thing to give is usually the work rather than the plier.
