That matters in use. A slimmer pivot means the tool gets into places a bulkier groove joint plier fouls on — under a sink, behind a cistern, between two pipes, inside a machine housing. Plumbing and machinery work is full of fittings that are perfectly accessible except that there is nothing to put a tool on, and head thickness decides more of those than jaw capacity does.

The adjustment is the point of any groove joint plier. Several pivot positions let the jaws open wide for a large fitting or close down for a small one, while keeping the jaws roughly parallel at every setting — and parallel jaws grip along their whole length instead of pinching at the tips, which is what stops the tool sliding off round work.

It is drop forged carbon steel, anti-rusted, with a comfortable ergonomic dipped handle. A dipped handle is a plastic coating applied by dipping the tool rather than a slip-on grip, so it does not work loose or twist off.

Two points. The serrated jaws mark what they grip, so keep a cloth between them and any chrome, plated or visible fitting. And treat them as a gripping tool rather than a spanner: on a hexagon nut the serrations round the corners, and a rounded nut is a much worse problem than an awkward one — use a spanner or socket wherever one fits, and save these for round work, damaged fasteners and things no spanner will reach.
