The extra handle length does two things at once. Your hand grip is multiplied more at the jaws, so the tool holds things a smaller plier would let slip: a rusted bolt shank, a length of pipe, a bracket being twisted straight, a wire being pulled through a conduit. And the cutter behind the pivot, which sits there because that is where leverage peaks, goes through wire that would stop a smaller pair — fencing wire, heavier cable, tie wire, small nails.

That capacity has a safety dimension worth mentioning. Forcing an undersized tool is what chips cutting edges and springs jaws, because the harder you squeeze the more the tool deforms rather than cutting. A tool working comfortably within its range is easier on your hands and lasts far longer, so buying the size that suits the work is not indulgence.

The three zones are standard and each earns its place: a flat serrated tip for flat stock and nuts, a curved serrated throat for round stock such as pipe and rod, and a hardened cutter behind the pivot.

The spring open design reopens the jaws between squeezes for one-handed use. The jaws are fine carbon steel, hardened, with two-colour anti-slip PP handles.

Three habits. Keep the cutter away from hardened steel, since nails, screws and spring wire chip a permanent notch. And on springy wire, cover the offcut with a hand or a rag, because a tensioned short end leaves the jaws fast.
