Combination Plier (7")

Leverage is worth understanding here because it is the only thing that changes across the three sizes, and it changes more than people expect. Handles and jaws pivot about a common point, so the ratio between handle length and jaw length sets how much your hand grip is multiplied at the jaws. A seven inch plier grips appreciably harder than a six for the same effort, and its cutter goes through noticeably heavier wire. Nothing about the steel or the design differs — you are buying mechanical advantage.

The three working zones are the same as on every combination plier and each has a purpose. The flat serrated tip grips flat stock, nuts and wire ends. The curved serrated throat behind it grips round stock — pipe, rod, bolt shanks — which is what stops the tool sliding off a cylindrical surface. The hardened cutter behind the pivot cuts wire, and sits behind the pivot precisely because that is where the leverage is greatest.

The spring open design reopens the jaws after each squeeze, allowing one-handed use. The jaws are fine carbon steel, hardened, with two-colour anti-slip PP handles.

Some care. The serrated jaws bite, so protect anything plated, polished, threaded or soft with a cloth in between. Keep the cutter away from hardened material — nails, screws, spring steel and hardened wire chip a notch that never repairs, and thereafter that part of the edge crushes instead of cutting. Do not use pliers as a substitute for a spanner on a nut you care about; the serrations round the corners, and a rounded nut is a much worse problem than an inconvenient one.
