Size on a circlip plier is decided by the clip, not by preference. The tips are pins that must fit the holes in the ends of the ring, and bigger clips have bigger holes. A tip that is undersized sits loose, cants over and jumps out under load; an oversized one will not enter at all. Angled tips reach into a bore that faces a wall, past a lip or a flange, or into a recess a straight plier cannot look down — which is what lets a cylinder or a housing be serviced in place instead of being removed first.

It is drop forged high carbon steel, high-frequency hardened, finely polished with an anti-rust black finish and a comfortable dipped handle. Surface hardening leaves a hard, wear-resistant skin over a tough core, which is what slender tips need.
