An internal circlip sits in a groove inside a bore, holding a bearing, bush, pin or seal into its housing, and removing it means squeezing it smaller until it clears. So on an internal plier, squeezing the handles closes the tips. That is the opposite of an external plier and the two cannot be swapped.

The bent tips are what make this the more useful of the two internal pliers for a great deal of real work. A straight plier needs to look directly down the bore, and very often you cannot — the housing is mounted, another component blocks the approach, the bore faces a wall, or the clip sits at the bottom of a recess with a lip in the way. Angled tips come in from the side and turn into the clip holes, reaching what a straight tool cannot see, let alone enter. On assembled machinery, where the whole point is not dismantling more than you have to, that reach is often the difference between a ten minute job and an afternoon.

Three habits worth keeping. Get both tips fully home in the clip holes before squeezing, because a bent plier working at an angle is more prone than a straight one to a tip sitting only part way in, and a tip that jumps out under load sends the clip flying. Wear eye protection and keep a rag loosely over the clip. And compress only as far as needed to clear the bore — past its elastic limit the clip stays small and will not hold in its groove, so it has to be replaced rather than refitted.
