Hydraulic cylinders are the job worth mentioning, because they are the commonest reason anybody buys a plier this size and because getting it wrong has consequences. The gland or end cap of a cylinder is very often retained by a large internal circlip, and servicing seals means removing it. The clip is substantial, its groove is deep, and the ring has to be squeezed a long way to clear the bore.

That brings the serious point. A large internal circlip compressed enough to clear a big bore is holding a great deal of stored energy. If a tip slips out of its hole, the ring releases all of it at once and travels fast and unpredictably. Full eye protection is essential at this size, and keeping a heavy rag draped loosely over the clip while it is under load is the simple habit that makes the difference. Make certain both tips are fully home before you squeeze — on a large clip a tip sitting half in is easy to miss and is exactly what lets go.

Compress the clip only as far as it needs to clear.
