Circlip plier tips are pins that have to fit the small holes in the ends of the clip, and larger clips have proportionately larger holes. Tips that are too small sit loose and at an angle and jump out under load; tips that are too large will not enter at all. So the nine inch plier is not a stronger seven inch one — it covers a different range of clip sizes, which is why the family exists in several lengths.

Internal is the key word. An internal clip holds a component into a housing, and removing it means squeezing it smaller until it clears the bore — so on this tool, squeezing the handles brings the tips together. That is the opposite of an external plier, which must spread its clip, and the two are not interchangeable. The rule is simple: clip inside a bore means internal, clip around a shaft means external.

Straight jaws suit an approach straight down the bore, which is the common case on cylinder ends and open housings.

It is drop forged high carbon steel, high-frequency hardened, finely polished with an anti-rust black finish and a comfortable dipped handle. High-frequency hardening heats only the surface layer of the steel before quenching, leaving a hard wear-resistant skin over a tough core — the correct treatment for slender tips that must neither wear round nor snap.

Bigger clips store more energy, so the precautions matter more. Seat both tips fully before applying load, wear eye protection, and keep a rag loosely over the clip while it is compressed. Squeeze only as far as it takes to clear the bore: a clip compressed past its elastic limit stays small and will not hold in its groove afterwards, and a retaining ring that does not hold is a bearing coming loose in service.
