An internal circlip sits in a groove machined inside a bore, holding something into a housing: a bearing in its seat, a bush in a casing, a pin in a fork, a seal in a cylinder. To remove one you must make it smaller, squeezing it inward until it clears the bore. So on an internal plier, squeezing the handles closes the tips together — the natural motion of your hand does the natural thing. On an external plier, squeezing the handles drives the tips apart, because an external clip has to be spread instead.

That opposite action is why the two are separate tools and cannot substitute for one another, and it is the single most common mistake made when buying circlip pliers. Look at the clip first: around the outside of a shaft means external, inside a bore means internal.

Straight jaws point directly forward, which suits a clip you can approach head-on — an open bore, a housing you are looking straight into, a cylinder end. Where the clip is recessed or the approach must be from the side, the bent version reaches.

Three habits. Seat both tips fully into the clip's holes before squeezing, since a partly engaged tip jumps out under load. Wear eye protection and keep a rag loosely over the clip, because hardened spring steel under tension travels fast when it escapes. And compress the clip only as far as it needs to clear the bore — squeezed past its elastic limit it stays small, will not grip the groove afterwards, and must be replaced.
