Circlip Plier External Straight Jaw (7")

External means it works on circlips that sit in a groove around the outside of a shaft, holding a bearing, gear or pulley in place. To get one of those off you have to make it bigger, spreading it until it clears the shaft. So on an external plier, squeezing the handles opens the tips. That is the opposite of an internal plier, and it is why the two cannot be substituted for one another — buy the wrong one and squeezing the handles drives the tips together while the clip needs to go apart.

Straight jaw means the tips point directly forward, in line with the tool. That is what you want when you can approach the circlip head-on: a clip on the end of an exposed shaft, on a stub axle, on a spindle you can get in front of. Where the clip is recessed or the approach is from the side, the bent jaw version is the one that reaches.

It is drop forged high carbon steel, high-frequency hardened, finely polished with an anti-rust black finish and a comfortable dipped handle. The tips are the critical part: they are slender pins that must fit small holes in a hardened spring steel clip and then push it hard sideways. High-frequency hardening puts a hard, wear-resistant surface on a tough core, which is exactly what a thin tip needs — hardened right through it would snap, and left soft it would bend and slip out of the clip holes.

Two safety points that are not formalities.
