Circlip pliers are sized to the clip, not to your preference. The tips are pins of a particular diameter that must fit the small holes in the ends of the circlip, and larger clips have larger holes. A seven inch plier's tips are too small for a big clip's holes — they rattle about, sit at an angle and jump out under load. Too large and they simply will not enter. So a nine inch plier is not a stronger seven; it is the tool for a different range of clip sizes, and having the right one is the difference between a clean removal and a clip pinging across the workshop.

The bent jaws approach the clip at an angle rather than head-on, which is what lets the tool reach clips that are recessed, set inside a housing or on a shaft you cannot get in front of. External means the clip sits in a groove around the outside of a shaft and must be spread to clear it, so squeezing the handles drives the tips apart — the opposite of an internal plier.

It is drop forged high carbon steel, high-frequency hardened, finely polished with an anti-rust black finish and a comfortable dipped handle. Surface hardening gives the tips a hard wear-resistant skin over a tough core, which is what keeps slender pins from both wearing and snapping.

The larger the clip, the more energy it stores, so the safety points get more serious with size. Eye protection is essential, and a rag kept loosely over the clip as it releases will catch it. And open the clip only as far as it needs to clear — a large clip spread past its elastic limit stays spread and will not hold in its groove, and a retaining clip that does not hold is a component coming loose in service.
