Circlip Plier External Bent Jaw (7")

A bent-jaw plier approaches the clip at an angle rather than head-on, and that solves the situation that stops a straight plier dead: the circlip is recessed, or set down inside a housing, or on a shaft you simply cannot get in front of because a casing, a bracket or another component is in the way. On gearbox internals, engine assemblies and machinery housings, that is more often the case than not — which is why many workshops use the bent version far more than the straight one.

External means it works on clips that sit in a groove around the outside of a shaft. To remove one you must spread it wider until it clears, so squeezing the handles of an external plier drives the tips apart. That is the opposite of an internal plier, and the two are not interchangeable: with the wrong one, squeezing closes the tips while the clip needs to open.

It is drop forged high carbon steel, high-frequency hardened, finely polished with an anti-rust black finish and a comfortable dipped handle. High-frequency hardening heats only the surface layer of the steel very rapidly before quenching, leaving a hard wear-resistant skin over a tough core — the right treatment for slender tips that must resist wear in the clip holes without being brittle enough to snap.

Three habits. Seat both tips fully into the clip's holes before squeezing — a tip that is only half in will jump out under load, and that is how clips are lost and eyes are hurt. Wear eye protection and keep a rag over the clip as it comes free, because hardened spring steel under tension travels. And open the clip only far enough to clear the shaft; spread beyond its elastic limit it stays spread, will not grip its groove afterwards, and has to be replaced.
