The size first. A longer frame means a deeper throat and a wider opening, so the clamp reaches much further in from the edge of the work and takes much thicker assemblies. On structural fabrication — heavy section, thick plate, built-up beams, large frames — that reach is often the whole question, because the joint that needs holding is nowhere near an edge a smaller clamp could get to. The extra handle length also gives more clamping force, which heavy section needs if it is to be pulled properly together rather than merely touched.

Alloy steel is the material upgrade that makes the size sensible. A long clamp frame is a long lever, and everything the jaws apply tries to spring it open; the longer the frame, the more it wants to flex. Alloy steel is stronger and stiffer than plain carbon steel plate, so more of your effort ends up as clamping pressure at the jaws rather than as bend in the frame.

The adjustable clamp mouth is the practical feature. Along with the usual screw adjustment, the jaw itself can be set, which widens the useful range of one tool and lets it be squared up to work of different thicknesses without running the screw all the way in and out.

The mechanism is the family's over-centre toggle: set the screw, squeeze to lock, pull the lever to release, both hands free in between.

Three points. Buy several — an alignment needs holding in more than one place, and at this size the pieces are heavy enough that a single clamp will let them swing. Keep the mechanism out of the arc, since spatter driven into a toggle linkage is what finishes these. And check squareness after clamping and before tacking, because heavy clamping pressure moves heavy section too, and cutting a large tacked assembly apart is a real loss of time.
