That combination is why these are the standard welding clamp. Setting up a fabrication means holding several pieces in exact relationship to each other while you tack them, and a screw clamp has to be wound in and out for every reposition. A C-clamp lock grip is set once with the adjusting screw and then snapped on and off in a second, which on a job where you reposition a dozen times is an entirely different pace of work.

The deep throat is the other half of it. Welding joints are frequently not at the edge of the material — a bracket in the middle of a plate, a stiffener across a panel, two members crossing. A conventional plier-type lock grip cannot reach in; the C frame can.

The jaws on this pattern are typically small and swivelling or shaped to sit on angle and flat stock, so they hold section squarely rather than pinching a corner.

Three points. Buy several. Fabrication setup is a matter of holding an alignment, and one clamp holds a point — most welders own four or six of these and use all of them on a single job. Keep the clamp and its mechanism away from the arc, because weld spatter driven into a toggle linkage is what kills them, and conducted heat does the springs no good. And check your alignment after clamping and before you tack, since clamping pressure moves things and a joint tacked out of square has to be cut apart.
