The angle also keeps your hand out of the way. Working straight-on at a small component, your fingers are directly in your own line of sight. With the tips bent over you can hold the plier off to one side and still see exactly what the jaws are doing, which is the whole point when the target is a 2mm circlip, a wire tail or a connector pin.

The spring open design is worth understanding because it is a genuine convenience rather than a detail. A spring between the handles pushes the jaws apart on their own, so the plier reopens after every squeeze without you having to pull the handles back. Two things to observe. Keep a pair of combination pliers for anything that needs force. And keep the pivot lightly oiled, since a stiff pivot on a spring-opening plier defeats the spring.
