A bent nose plier is a long nose plier with its tips angled over, and that single bend changes what it can reach. Where a straight plier needs to come at the work head-on, a bent nose comes in from the side and turns the corner — which matters enormously when the thing you need to grip is behind something else, down inside a housing, or on the far side of a bracket that will not move.
The angle also keeps your hand out of the way. Working straight-on at a small component, your fingers are directly in your own line of sight. With the tips bent over you can hold the plier off to one side and still see exactly what the jaws are doing, which is the whole point when the target is a 2mm circlip, a wire tail or a connector pin.
Six inches is the standard size for this pattern — long enough for real reach, small enough to work at a bench.
The spring open design is worth understanding because it is a genuine convenience rather than a detail. A spring between the handles pushes the jaws apart on their own, so the plier reopens after every squeeze without you having to pull the handles back. On repetitive work — placing a run of clips, dressing a loom, positioning components one after another — that halves the hand movement, and it means the tool can be used one-handed while the other hand holds the work. Anybody doing fine assembly notices it within minutes.
The jaws are fine carbon steel, hardened, with a two-colour anti-slip PP handle. Hardening is what keeps serrated gripping jaws from wearing smooth, and smooth jaws are what start slipping off small parts.
The buyers are electricians and electronics technicians, appliance and equipment repairers, instrument and watch repairers, model makers, jewellers, and hardware dealers supplying benches.
Two things to observe. A long nose plier of any kind has slender jaws and they are the weak point — using them to turn a stubborn nut, lever something apart or grip a large fastener springs them permanently out of alignment, and once the tips no longer meet, the tool is finished for the fine work it was bought for. Keep a pair of combination pliers for anything that needs force. And keep the pivot lightly oiled, since a stiff pivot on a spring-opening plier defeats the spring.
