Understanding the four situations is what makes the set make sense, and it is the thing people most often get wrong when buying. Circlips come in two families. An external circlip sits in a groove around the outside of a shaft, holding a bearing or a gear in place, and to remove it you must open it up — spread it wider so it clears the shaft. An internal circlip sits in a groove inside a bore, holding something into a housing, and to remove it you must squeeze it smaller so it clears the bore. Those are opposite actions, which is why external and internal pliers are different tools: squeezing the handles opens one and closes the other.

The second variable is the tip angle. Straight tips approach the circlip head-on and are what you want when the clip is out in the open. Bent tips come in at an angle, which is what you need when the clip is recessed, inside a housing, or on a shaft you cannot get in front of. In practice most jobs need one specific combination of the two, and having none of it stops the work entirely.
