Wire Rope Cutter (24")

Wire rope is not solid. It is dozens of fine wires laid up into strands and the strands laid into a rope, and every one of those wires is under tension holding the lay together. Cut it with a flat bolt cutter blade and the rope is crushed flat first and then split, which lets the strands unlay and spring apart — you are left with a frayed, splayed end that will not pass through a thimble, will not enter a ferrule, and will not take an end fitting without being cut back and started again.

The blades on a wire rope cutter are shaped as opposing crescents. They surround the rope and close in on it from all sides at once, holding the strands together while they are sheared. The result is a clean end that keeps its lay, which is the whole point — a rope that will accept a swaged ferrule, a thimble, a clamp or a socket without further work.

The blades are drop forged T8 steel, heat treated. Drop forging flows the steel's grain around the curved cutting profile rather than cutting through it, which matters on a crescent blade where the load is concentrated in the throat. The specification names steel and stainless steel wire rope, and stainless is the harder of the two to cut cleanly, so that is a useful thing to have stated.

Two habits. Bind or tape the rope either side of the cut before you make it — a wrap of tape or a seizing keeps the strands together while the blades close, and gives a genuinely clean end even on larger rope.
