SK5 is a Japanese high carbon tool steel — the designation covers a steel with roughly 0.8 to 0.9 percent carbon, hardened and tempered. That carbon content is what allows it to be taken to a high hardness, and hardness on a knife blade translates directly into two things: how keen an edge it will take, and how long it holds that edge before it starts tearing rather than slicing. A blade that dulls quickly is not just slower — it is more dangerous, because a dull edge skids across the material instead of biting in and travels wherever the force was aimed.

At 18x100mm these are the standard snap-off size, fitting the plastic, zinc alloy and metal-flute knives in this range. Each blade is scored into segments, so one blade gives seven or eight fresh points: snap the dull end off and a new edge appears. Ten blades per plastic box is around eighty usable edges.

The plastic box matters more than it sounds. Loose blades in a toolbox are a genuine hazard when you reach in without looking, and a proper box also keeps them dry — a high carbon steel blade will spot with rust in a humid store, and a rusted edge is a dull edge.

Three habits, all safety ones. Snap the segments off with pliers or the snapper in the knife's end cap, holding the piece in a cloth — never with bare fingers. A snapped segment is razor sharp all round and it flies.

Extend one or two segments only when cutting. A long extended blade flexes under pressure and then breaks, and a blade breaking under load sends a fragment somewhere nobody predicted.
