Universal Knife (Aluminum Alloy)

A snap-off knife uses a long segmented blade in a sliding flute. A universal knife — often called a trimming or utility knife — takes a short, thick, trapezoidal blade held rigidly in the head. That blade is far stiffer than a snap-off blade and it does not flex, which makes this the tool for heavy cutting: thick card and packaging, carpet and vinyl, roofing felt, leather and canvas, insulation board, and anything where you press hard and the blade must not wander or snap.

The trade is that a universal blade does not renew itself. When it dulls you change it rather than snapping a segment, though each blade has two usable ends before it is finished.

Three habits. Cut away from your body, and never towards your supporting hand — with a rigid blade and real hand pressure behind it, a slip goes a long way. Change the blade the moment it stops cutting cleanly, because a blunt blade skids off the material rather than biting in and travels wherever you were pushing, which is how the great majority of knife injuries happen. And use a straightedge and a cutting mat rather than freehanding a long cut on a floor.
